The Positives

Job Growth – Despite the many hindrances brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, the trucking industry has shown promising signs of growth, and this is certainly the case for employment opportunities. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that there 1.564 million people were employed in the trucking industry as of April 2022 – that’s 60,000 more people than the previous year of 2021 (FMI). In the upcoming year, this number is anticipated to go anywhere but down, a promising truth for truckers and other employees in the industry.

Heightened Earnings – In what can be interpreted as more promising news for the industry, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that truckers made more on a weekly basis than the average American (FMI). As a matter of fact, the Bureau concluded that employees in the industry earned an average of $1,116 a week in 2022 (FMI).

The Negatives

Driver & Workforce Shortages – Caused largely by the COVID-19 pandemic, driver shortages have ushered in significant problems for many all across the industry. Turning to a solution, a number of analysts and commentators have claimed that recruiting young drivers may help alleviate driver shortages, but this point remains contested by many. In 2023, it’s unclear exactly what lies ahead for ongoing driver shortages, and this uncertainty continues to concern the industry.
